Is it absurd to be sitting here, in 2012, talking about punk rock? Isn’t punk rock dead? What is “punk” rock these days. “London Calling” in a commercial for the Olympics? Is it actually more punk rock to turn that rebellion into money?
Ah, sheeeeeit. It’s almost too stupid to continue. I mean, come on, have you been to the new VANS store in Lenox Mall? Speaking of, I need a new pair, nothing says, “I’m punk rock” better than the worst shoes for your feet possible.

Anyhow, I’ve tasked myself with “reviewing” the OFF! show so I have no choice but to continue.

SIDE NOTE: If you are new to this site, I don’t really review stuff. I try to create an awareness of songs or bands that bring me joy. If I like it, it’s good. And if I don’t, it’s not any good. From time to time, if something really irks me, like DAVE FM, or “Ring Of Fire” by Social Distortion, I’ll say so. But mostly, it’s “hey check this out: this new No Doubt tune is pretty rad,” etc.

Anyway, I’d been meaning to tell you to check out the newest OFF! record (simply titled OFF!) so while sitting in a plane just a few weeks ago I decided to finally put pencil to paper, which was odd, as I’d normally put fingers on keyboard, but I didn’t have my computer with me. So I cranked it up. Of course, by the time I had pen and paper situated (oh, my pencil was too dull, so I had to dig back around in my bag for a pen), the record was one-third finished.
Yeah, I still call ‘em records.
Long story short: the delayed, two sentence recap: As much as I loved (and continue to love) the First Four EPs, (you do have, or have heard the First Four EPs, yes? If so, you have a good handle on what the record is about: short blasts of late 70’s style west coast punk) I am more excited by the painting around the edges on tunes like “King Kong Brigade”, my new favorite song. I feel this 2nd release is a stronger record.

OFF! took the stage at the Masquerade Music Park, or as Keith called it, the miniature golf course, at 8pm. The ticket said 7pm. So that left some pre-show time to observe all the dudes and old-time punker’s still rocking that tribal look. You know, the giant ear hoops. Really? That’s still a thing. Eh, I guess once you’ve stretched out your earlobes there’s no going back. And seeing how many people still smoke. Gross. Ok, I don’t get out much. It takes a lot to bring me into town. OFF! was such an event. It was worth the commute.

I guess that’s the review: It was worth the commute. They were smoking, blasting through, by my count, 22 songs. A nice mix of the First Four EPs and the new one. Check this out: King Kong Brigade live.

Yeah, 70’s style west coast punk. The music may be a throw back, name checking Darby Crash and lyrical references to Black Flag, but OFF! is no nostalgia act. And THAT is why this group works. Why they are great.
And they are so great because they are great: the dudes can play. Keith might look like he just stumbled in off the streets, but he’s a pro. The band is tight. Bam, bam, bam, bam song after song. On the money. There’s always been the lofty ideal in the punk world, anyone can do it… you don’t have be Steve Howe or Brain May or John Mayer. And in some cases that works out. But to be here, 30+ years later, you have to know what your doing and do it well. Even if it’s just punk rock.

So, to answer my own question, it’s not absurd at all to be talking about punk rock in 2012. It’s alive. And I’m as happy as my 15 year old poseur self seeing Black Flag to have this real punk band out on the road.

If they come to your town, don’t miss it. If they don’t come to your town, go to another town.

I got 99 problems but telling you Coldplay is awesome ain’t one.

Two truths:
FOO FIGHTERS are a perfectly serviceable bar band. They have some good tunes. I really enjoy the first record. But why they are as big as U2 I can’t even comprehend.
COLDPLAY blow FOO FIGHTERS off the stage.

I WANT TO PUNCH THAT SONG IN THE FACE™ | “Come Together” by Aerosmith

Cover tunes are awesome.

One artist can pay tribute to another.

Expose their audience to another band.

Grab a jewel and make it THEIRS.

Or just re-do the song note for note – simply play it and by virtue of them playing it is awesome.

But I do not understand, CANNOT UNDERSTAND, the continued play of “Come Together” by Aerosmith. I’d say it’s overplayed but just playing it all is overplay. It stinks.

I like Aerosmith. How to say… yes, they RAWK.

But their version of “Come Together” is lame*.

It’s not nearly as good as the original.

It’s not nearly as good as the original’s original.

But it’s played over and over and over and over…

Dear Atlanta radio, might I suggest these few nuggets from Aerosmith:

“You See Me Crying”

“No More No More”

“I ain’t seen the daylight since I started this band!”

“Back In The Saddle”

“I’m baaaaaaack!” from the aptly titled ROCKS. This one is kind of a hit? I think? So it might get play

This is just a few… and to be honest my knowledge of back catalog Aerosmith is pretty much TOYS IN THE ATTIC. So I’m certain there are nuggets galore. Please clue me in.

***Or it’s possible this could be the GREATEST SONG EVER™. You see, most people probably don’t realize this tune is from the 70’s movie, “SGT PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND” starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. What’s great is that AEROSMITH are the villains. They represent what is evil about corporate rock. So perhaps the continued airplay and popularity of this tune is appropriate.
